Homemade lip balm recipe

This is a simple homemade lip balm recipe using all natural ingredients and it works better than most shop bought lip balms. A lot of lip balms available in the shops are petroleum based and contain many harsh chemical flavourings. This balm contains only natural oils and beeswax.

To make this homemade lip balm recipe, you will need the following:

organic coconut oil
organic olive oil
organic beeswax
organic peppermint essential oil

Start by gently melting 15g of organic beeswax in a double boiler, add 30g of organic coconut oil and 30g of organic olive oil and mix well, the beeswax may solidify a little when adding the oil so it is a good idea to add this a little at a time and stir in until the mixture becomes liquid again.

Remove from the heat, add 20 drops of organic peppermint essential oil, this will make the ratio around 1% of essential oil which is a safe amount for adults and children age 2 and over. If you wanted to use this on younger children age 6-24 months you could half this amount of essential oil to 10 drops making it 0.5% and this is considered safe for children of this age. For younger infants I would aim for around 0.1% which would be no more than 2 drops of essential oil, however you could leave the essential oil out entirely as the purpose of the peppermint oil is simply to give a cooling freshness when applying to the lips.

The active ingredients in this balm are coconut oil and olive oil. Coconut oil is rich and moisturising which makes it an excellent remedy for dry and cracked skin and olive oil is rich in antioxidants and vitamin e which makes it a very good oil to use in face and body treatments.

Once you have added your essential oil, stir well and then you can pour this balm into some glass jars. If you prefer a stick you could purchase some lip balm container tubes which are available in different materials, from plastic to bamboo. You will more than likely need a small funnel to pour your liquid into these small tubes.
