Homemade After Sun Lotion

This homemade after sun lotion recipe is simple, contains just a few natural ingredients and is very effective in the treatment of sun damaged skin.

Ingredients

100g Organic Shea Butter – moisturising and packed with vitamins
40g Pure Aloe Vera Gel – cooling and soothing
30ml Cold Pressed Organic Olive Oil – rich in antioxidants and vitamin E
20 Drops of Organic Lavender Essential Oil – anti-inflammatory and rich in antioxidants
20 Drops of Organic Tea Tree Essential Oil – soothing, relives pain and helps to reduce peeling and blistering

Other things you will need are, a glass mixing bowl, a Stick Blender or food mixer/electric whisk and a glass jar for storage.

You can either purchase the Aloe Vera gel ready to use or extract it from an Aloe Vera plant, when extracting it yourself from a plant, it is important to remove all of the outer parts of the leaves, use a sharp knife to cut away the sides first, then cut the top green part exposing the gel, then use a spoon to scoop the gel away from the remaining green part of the plant. Avoid using any of the green part of any of the milky white substance that is within the green part of the plant and just remove the pure, clear gel and add this to a small dish ready to use. You can purchase pure Aloe Vera gel but beware of additives that may be in many of these off the shelf products.

Ensure your shea butter is at room temperature and begin whisking the shea butter in a glass bowl until it becomes light, soft and fluffy, ensuring any lumps are worked out. You can use a double boiler if you wish to gently meant the shea butter if it is particularly cool and difficult to work into a smooth consistency. Then add the Aloe Vera gel and continue to work the mixture until the 2 are completely combined, if using fresh gel from a plant it tends to clump together so this will take a while longer than using gel from a tube. You could use the stick blender on the Aloe Vera gel first before adding to the mix to help reduce any lumps.

Add 30ml of cold pressed virgin olive oil, 20 drops of lavender essential oil and 20 drops of tea tree essential oil. Continue to whisk for a further 2 or 3 minutes to fully combine the mixture.

Transfer the mixture into a glass jar and keep in the fridge for a longer shelf life, storing it refrigerated will also make it more soothing when applying to sun damaged skin.
